Commerce started early in the hills

Event Description:

The Bakehouse operated from 1878 to 1940 and offers a fascinating insight into the workings of a late 19th Century bakery with many of the baker's tools of trade on display.

Sited on the picturesque banks of Sturt River, the Bakehouse grounds are a delightful spot to stop for a chat and cuppa.

Volunteers from Coromandel Valley & Districts Branch of National Trust SA act as guides and share stories of the families who ran the Bakehouse and their role in the social and economic development of the area.

The museum is only open to small groups and bookings are essential.

Gamble Cottage, about 5 minutes at the corner of Main and Dorham Roads, Blackwood, gives a peek into early 20th Century life and is once again open to visitors from 1-4pm on the third Sunday, February to November.
